Locating Private Utilities with GPR – Central Florida

Private utility locating is essential prior to ground breaking and excavation on your next project. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, LLC. is a sub-surface, private utility locating company with 12 years of experience with GPR. GPRS, LLC. was recently contacted to locate sub-surface utilities at an office in a large business park in central Florida. The contractor on the project needed to perform directional drilling to run new communication lines to the building from the street. It was pertinent that all existing utilities in the area be located so they would not be struck during the drilling process.

After meeting and walking the site with the contractor for just a few minutes, GPRS technicians had a good idea of the scope of work and quickly began scanning. We covered the areas requested and marked all utilities located directly on the surface with colored marking paint that identified each utility. After the inspection, we documented our findings in a field sketch for the contractors use.

The equipment used in the scan was a three-wheeled, push cart carrying a 400MHz antenna capable of detecting objects at a depth of approximately 8’ deep. The antenna relays its signal to an SIR-3000 computer system which displays the ground penetrating radar data. In the pictures below, you can see the 400MHz cart set-up used to locate utilities in the sub-surface. You can also see the spray paint markings on the concrete surface indicating the location of the utilities under the slab.
