Ground Penetrating Radar Used for Utility Locating for New Cellular Tower Site - Phoenix, AZ Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, LLC. of Arizona was contacted by a major cell tower contractor to locate all underground utilities for installation of a new cell tower. While GPRS has conducted utility locating services for many new cellular tower installation projects, this project posed unique challenges for the contractor. The proposed cellular tower site was to be situated on the property of a local power plant. Consequently, there was a high concentration of known underground utilities including high voltage power conduit, fiber optic lines, gas lines, water lines, and possible sewer lines.
The contractor was given the difficult and critical task of ensuring that the proposed cellular tower site was to be clear of all utilities before any excavating was to take place. This was essential, in order to avoid extremely expensive damages, repairs, and most importantly, the need to mitigate all exposure to safety risks. Ground penetrating Radar mapping is a great tool to scan areas of post tension cables, rebar, and conduits, including PVC pipes. Ground penetrating radar can also be used to locate underground utilities such as water, gas, electrical, communication, sewer, and other objects prior to digging or excavating.
