Private Utility Locating Project - Orlando International Airport

With new developments and expansion of cities, airports must grow to adjust to healthier activity, and this growth requires lots and lots of hands on deck to make sure construction projects and installations go smoothly. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems works with numerous contractors and understands the importance of keeping things running smoothly.

The Orlando International Airport was working on an expansion project that included a new terminal, new parking areas and additional facilities, and all of these buildings required the installation of utility lines. Much of the area had not been developed before, but much of the area crosses into several territories that are connected to the airport, and therefore, it was vital that the contractor had this area scanned. If the contractor would have hit a water, or a critical power line, the airport would have had some serious issues. So, the contractors decided to call their loyal and trusted friends at GPRS to come and make sure this does not happen.

Above is a picture that depicts Nate Schmoe, of GPRS, LLC. scanning the directional boring area.

The installation company was planning to directional bore several hundred yards under runways and behind utility buildings while crossing high voltage electrical lines, communication lines and some water lines. To avoid hitting these utilities, the areas were scanned with a GPR device by the Project Manager. The GPR device is able to provide clear data indicating the depth and direction of the utilities. A radio detection device was also used to aid in understanding which utilities were electrical and which were communication line. The GPRS professional marked out the areas with small amounts of paint. The airport did not allow for usage of flags so the areas were photographed and a report was provided to the client with Google Map images outlining the details of the findings. This way the client would have something to provide to the boring company for reference when then began boring. After the job was completed the findings were relayed to the on-site staff so that there was no miscommunication or misinterpretation of the findings.

After all was said and done, the utilities were installed without any issues, and the clients were satisfied that they were able to do their work without any major hiccups.
