Radio Detection Used to Locate Utilities at the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Radio Detection Used to Locate UtilitiesBentzel Mechanical had a project at the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands that was part of a complete remodel of portions of the resort.  The project involved core drilling for the routing of plumbing lines vertically between floors and the saw cutting of walls to run duct work on multiple floors.  They were concerned about the potential for utilities to be running through both the floors and walls and they decided to contact Ground Penetrating Radar Systems to see what type of locating service they could provide.  GPRS quickly informed them that with their technology it should not be difficult to locate any potential utilities running through either the slabs or the walls.  GPRS’s Tampa, FL representative, Jim James, mobilized to the site within days of the call and performed the concrete imaging using both ground penetrating radar and radio detection to ensure that utilities of all types were not present in areas to be cut or drilled.

GPRS was able to complete the scan ahead of schedule and provide safe locations to complete the drilling and cutting.  In addition to providing locations for utilities, GPRS also mapped out all of the rebar in the concrete so that the openings could be created with minimum compromise to the supporting steel.  Bentzel’s subcontractors that were performing the work were very pleased with the quick mobilization, quick survey times, and the quality of the information provided.  If you are interested in obtaining more information or a quote please visit out “Contact Us” page for a local representative near you.
