Ground Penetrating Radar Systems of Nebraska received a call from a general contractor in Omaha, Nebraska with questions about locating near-surface utilities prior to excavation at a high school. The school had little to no records detailing the location of the water lines and other utilities that supported the temporary outdoor buildings that were removed for renovation. As is often the case, we had no idea what was in the ground prior to our arrival. We began by locating the network of copper water pipes that had fed the four buildings they removed. During the scan, GPRS located all of the utility lines that were in the area so that they would not be damaged during the excavation process.

  

Excavating can be unpredictable with the vast network of underground utilities that are buried and forgotten about. Having a private locate done prior to breaking ground is always a safe and prudent choice. Also, Ground Penetrating Radar Systems can collect the GPS coordinates of the utilities for long term documentation, so even if you don’t have any prior documentation, you are not completely at a loss.
