Underground Storage Tank (UST) Locating In Chicago

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems of Chicago was recently hired by an environmental firm out of Chicago to scan a parking lot for possible UST’s. The vacant lot was scanned in a downtown neighborhood before a local developer was able to move forward on converting this lot into more condo’s. The size of the lot that was scanned was 170’ by 65’. Since Chicago had gotten hit with a lot of snow before this project, the lot needed to be clear of snow in order for us to complete our GPR scan for the possible tanks. We are able to scan through a couple inches of snow but that’s about it. After scanning the lot GPRS was able to tell the client that there were no tanks on the site, but there was a big area of soil disturbance where one tank may have been removed in the past. By having this information the environmental group can now move forward in taking soil samples in this disturbed location to verify the conditions of the soil prior to excavating for the new building.
