Utility and Void Locating at The Old Chicago Sun Times Printing Press - Chicago IL

Void and Private Utility Locating - Chicago, IllinoisSeveral investors have bought the old Chicago Sun Times printing press and plan to turn it into a billion dollar data processing center. The printing equipment has been removed from the building and the data equipment will soon be moved in. In order to get the new data equipment into the building, large cranes are being used in several locations around the building. Mortenson Construction has been contracted to retrofit the building for the new data center.

Mortenson Construction contacted GPRS to use Ground Penetrating Radar and Radio Detection to find any utilities or voids in the areas that the cranes are going to sit. Technician Michael Flis used a Radio Detection wand and 400 MHz GPR to locate the electric, water, sewer, and fire protection water lines that were in the area where the cranes are to be set. All lines were marked out in paint on the ground so that when the cranes arrive, they can be set in an area that will not cause damage to any of the utilities.
