Howard University Hospital

conduit location hospitalIn August 2008, Ground Penetrating Radar was contacted by Green Contracting in regards to a project at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.  Green Contracting was placing new equipment into the 7th floor of the hospital and they needed to cut out the existing concrete floor prior to installation. However, they had worries about striking conduit in the flooring while they were saw cutting. This is where the use of GPR was needed to come in and map out the four areas that had to be cut out and identify any power running through the slab.

Ground Penetrating Radars Arlington/D.C. Regional Director, Jamey Harmon, was able to arrive on site within two days of receiving Green’s request. While at the hospital several conduits were located in the floor and marked directly onto the surface since GPR is done in real time. This means all items were located while on site so that the conduit placement in the concrete was marked onto the surface.  Green Contracting was then able to cut around the areas where conduit was located and then go back and chip out concrete around these lines to ensure no conduits were hit. Doing the above, no workers were injured and no power was lost to the hospital during construction.

If you are worried about striking conduits, rebar or post-tension cables during coring or saw cutting in Virginia or Maryland contact Ground Penetrating Radar @ 703.728.7333 or by email at jamey.harmon@gprsinc.com.
